As AI’s unprecedented rise to the forefront of innovation has sparked major breakthroughs in various industries, it is imperative to address the AI dangers that come with it. An era where machines emulate human-like cognition and problem-solving is no longer just the province of science fiction, but a tangible reality transforming the very core of modern society. While AI ushers in limitless potential, the shadows it casts are equally formidable. As we teeter on the precipice of this new world, it is paramount that we peer into the unknown and scrutinize the dangers that lie within this new technology.
One of the most common examples when discussing AI dangers is that AI can perpetuate and even amplify societal inequalities. These algorithms learn from the data they are fed, and if this data contains biases, the AI system will inevitably adopt them. For instance, in 2015, an AI model used to predict future criminals was accused of being biased against African Americans through “risk scores.”
Dr. Kate Crawford, an award-winning author and senior principal researcher at Microsoft Research, explains, “There is no ‘neutral’ AI. AI systems are shaped by the priorities and prejudices – deliberate or accidental – of the people who build them.”
When AI models are trained on data that reflect historical prejudices or systemic biases, they might make decisions that are unfair to certain demographics. For example, a hiring algorithm trained on past employment data might favor male candidates for certain roles, reflecting historical gender biases in the workplace.
AI systems, especially those that interact with the internet or have access to sensitive data, are prone to security vulnerabilities. These algorithms can be exploited for malicious purposes, such as unauthorized data access. For example, in 2018, hackers used an AI algorithm to mimic the voice of a U.K.-based energy firm’s CEO, leading to a fraudulent transfer of more than $240,000. Dr. Roman Yampolskiy, a professor in AI at the University of Louisville, points out that these systems are “highly vulnerable to a variety of attacks including adversarial inputs, spoofing, and genetic optimization attacks.”
As AI systems dramatically grow their efficiency rates, the danger of human jobs being displaced skyrockets. According to a study by Oxford Economics, up to 20 million manufacturing jobs worldwide could be replaced by these systems come 2030. Moreover, The Challenger Report, a renowned resource for job displacement statistics, concluded that roughly 4,000 jobs were replaced by AI in the U.S. within the last month alone. Director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, Professor Erik Brynjolfsson, explains, “ What’s different now is the scale and speed of the change. It requires us to reinvent our educational system and our approach to job training.”
As AI systems become more sophisticated, the potential for their integration into autonomous weapons that can take actions without human interventions grows. These AI-powered weapons could be used in conflicts or seep their way into mainstream society, raising ethical questions and concerns about unintended escalation and the potential for loss of human control over lethal force.
In an Identity Review exclusive interview, Chief AI Ethics Officer of the U.S. Army Dr. David Barnes explained, “We are harnessing the ability to bring in various features of a number of different artificial intelligence systems from multiple nations, and have them working synergistically through trial and error…The main advantage of AI now, as it had been philosophized many years ago, is to see ourselves and see the enemy in a way that we really have not been able to before.”
There is a growing tendency to rely on AI for decision-making in critical areas like healthcare, justice, and finance. Over-reliance can be dangerous, especially when the algorithms are not fully understood or when they’re based on flawed and outdated data. This can lead to crucial decisions that are sub-optimal or even harmful. Renowned AI researcher and former president of the Association for the Advancement of AI (AAAI), Professor Tom Mitchell explains, “While AI’s capabilities continue to grow, it’s crucial we don’t become complacent, treating it as a silver bullet for every problem. Over-reliance on AI could stifle human creativity, intuition, and decision-making. AI is a tool, not a master.”
Recently, one of the budding controversies surrounding AI is in regards to hyper-realistic fake videos or audio recordings of real-world individuals using AI, otherwise known as “Deep Fakes.” These can be used maliciously to impersonate public figures or celebrities, create fake news, or for fraud. The increasing sophistication of deep fakes makes it difficult for people to discern what is real, impacting public trust and the integrity of communication channels.
Often referred to as “black box” AI, this opacity can lead to misguided trust and a lack of understanding of how AI systems arrive at conclusions. For instance, in the healthcare sector, AI-powered diagnostic tools can make decisions that affect patient care, yet the reasoning behind these decisions is often obscured, leaving clinicians and patients in the dark. No matter how positive the benefits of an algorithm may be, they are close to worthless of they can not be replicable or built upon in real-world scenarios. This transparency paradox steers away from human research and instead results in more of a “show-and-tell” project.
These are not abstract threats; they are tangible challenges that warrant thoughtful and decisive action. However, they are not insurmountable. Instead, they represent opportunities to channel AI’s extraordinary capabilities responsibly, striking a balance between innovation and caution. The path forward necessitates a collective commitment to design and deploy AI systems that are not only technologically advanced but ethically sound, secure, and respectful of our shared human values.
As we look ahead, we must stay energized by the potential of AI rather than paralyzed by fear. The promise of this new technology is enormous, and with that we must provide a foundation of transparency and security for which it can grow. It has become a popular belief that AI will outpace humanity and will one day be out of our control, but remember, the pen that scripts the narrative of AI is in our hands.
